TRACES on Caladan Gallery

I am showing 15 pieces of my work from the TRACES Series on Caladan Gallery. This exhibition is on-line from September 15 – October 31, 2009. Majorie Kaye, director of Caladan Gallery wrote in the press release about my work:
"The interior of our conscious experience is filled with layer upon layer of memory. In these works by Sand T, these memories have made their way to the surface; there is an added dimension created by the fact that the path that these memories took to get to this surface has been left partially opened, a gateway to the unconscious mind of the artist, as well as to the observer. In this way, the artist's memories are forever intermingled with our own, calling upon a collective experience. An extensive range of emotion rises to the top, identifiable to us. From a sense of irony, to sadness, joy, love and reverence, we are left with a chronicle of our own lives. The artist has given us a gift, the gift of her experience, both private and un-self-conscious."

陈素创作来自梦境

Image: What did you dream about last night? - mixed media on hardboard panel, 18 x18x1.75.

DREAMING IN PURSUIT OF MEMORY at Caladan Gallery 5/10 - 6/14

Three pieces of my work have been selected to participate in “Dreaming in Pursuit of Memory", an on-line juried exhibition of 33 national and international artists presented by Caladan Gallery. In addition, I have been selected as one of the "Solo Exhibition Award" recipients, I am excited about this Award, thank you! This exhibition will be on-line at http://www.caladangallery.com from May 10 – June 14, 2009. For more information, please call (617) 838-8929 or email Marjorie Kaye at director@caladangallery.com.

The below text is quoted
from a press release for “Dreaming in Pursuit of Memory" exhibit written by Marjorie Kaye, the Gallery Director - -

"Memories and dreams reside in a similar place in the depths of human consciousness. There are those of us, if given a chance, would seek to continuously contemplate the past, assigning significance to the present. The dream can be said to be an abstract representation of memory, whether it manifest as actual events, or something more in line with the collective unconscious of the entity that is civilization. Memories and dreams take on similar forms in our minds’ eyes, however varied they can become. What is the difference between a dream in sleep and that which manifests in the light of day? What is the arrangement of the brain cells of memory that form to create these dreams? The artists in this exhibition catch themselves wandering into this realm of mysterious enigma, translating and transforming symbol and icon into the visual."

Image: Flying Dream by Sand T, 11" x 11" x 2", Resin, paper, graphite, color pencil on acrylic glass panel.

"Sand T, Solo Exhibition Winner (Malden, MA), creates balance in texturally rich works. There is a conversation between the rigidity of resin, and the fluidity of what lies beneath it. It is as if the resin is catching contemporary fossils in the style of the amber of prehistory. Fossilized is the childhood memory of the artist, the innocence and lure of freedom; one realizes that Sand approaches her childhood, consults with herself in the form of memory to guide her present experience. In the form of visual poetry she investigates the daily balance between fact and suggestion; dream and cohesion; privacy and the striving towards unity. This is made manifest in the dialogue between the seemingly contrasting human-made and more organic materials. Through these materials the artist goes beyond building a time capsule - she creates building blocks for her ongoing investigation of her own primal nature."

*"... Sand's work consists of studious compilations of language, sketches, imagery, and a command of a medium she has made her own. Sand began using epoxy to protect her work, then reexamined the possibilities of the compound and began using it as a medium to visually enhance her work. The drops of epoxy she uses on the surface of her work become elements of design, as well as distributors of light and tools of magnification.

Image: Fragments of Life - 15" x 15" x 3", mixed media on acrylic glass panel. Completed
this piece on November 14, 2008, the night before I installed Up Close and Personal at TLGUTS .

When she uses the epoxy in this manner, elements of the image which help define the conceptual intent of the work are highlighted, helping the viewer interpret her work, seeing beyond the visual beauty of the piece as a whole, and into the private world of the artist.

She also uses epoxy to create layers between the collaged printed material, adding dimension and space for light to travel through the pieces which would otherwise fall flat on the surface.

Each element of each piece is carefully considered from the creation of the cradle, through the selection and layout of imagery, the relationship of the font styles next to the handwritten excerpts, the masterful use of epoxy, and finally, through the handmade pegs and wooden supports she uses to display the work...."

You're Cordially Invited to A Closing Reception at TLGUTS on January 17, 2009.

My exhibit,
UP-CLOSE-AND-PERSONAL at the Little Gallery Under the Stairs in the LynnArts Building opened on Nov 22, 2008. I am showing about 50 mixed media works on acrylic glass and hardboard. The work, which I started working on in 2000, documents the continuously evolving conditions of my personal experience in a multi-cultural setting. If you missed the first two receptions, no sweat, the exhibit is up thru January 17, and there will be a closing reception for this exhibit on Saturday January 17, from 2 - 4pm. So, please come see the original pieces in a well lit gallery setting...

We are very much looking forward to your visit.

"Dear diary" by Meredith Goldstein, in the Boston Globe, Nov 20, 2008.
"... The display is Sand's take on language, memory, and combining cultures. The mixed-media paintings, with materials like floor plans and multilingual diary entries, should remind you of scrapbooks...." read on http://www.boston.com/ae/theater_arts/articles/2008/11/20/dear_diary?

"... The epoxy is used to encase the work as well as to magnify pieces of the imagery, highlighting the work's focal points and bending light to creating both intimate and immense spaces. Each piece is created on hardboard or acrylic glass which is fixed to a skillfully treated "cradle" to compliment the face of the work and create whole pieces without the need for investing in framing or further treatment before hanging.

The subject matter of her work ranges from dreamscapes to explorations of the various cultures which influence her personal life as well as her visual language as an artist.

The exhibit, which is on display salon style, mixes new works with older works, taking the viewer through the stages of the artist's process in this series' creation. This exhibit provides the opportunity to see this body of Sand T's work in a way that will allow collectors to combine small groupings of work that are either varied or uniform in content and style, but are either way both complimentary and cohesive....
