TRACES is a documentation of the continuously evolving conditions of a self in a multi-cultural setting. I employ various media, such as collage, painting, illuminated sculpture and art installation to convey experience.
Through these works, I show the relationships and boundaries between two or more cultures, dreams and realities, and spaces of intimacy and immensity. I am particularly interested in looking into the substance of transformation (change/creation), transplantation (relocation/adaptation) and translation (language/communication).
Besides the abridged representation of real life experiences, most of the pieces are compact visual models of my dreamscapes. Though I could not possibly illustrate real life experience or dreams in one body of work, but as the old saying goes: “Dream reveals reality, reality reflects dream”. I intend to create a compressed environment where I can revisit and reflect.
The material I embed in this series is a combination of sketches, computer generated images, Polaroid photos, floor plans, journal excerpts, and trilingual text that I have collected through the years. These elements have served as one of the inspirations and means to create my work.
The resin droplets over the surface function as miniature magnifying glasses: distorting, inspecting and amplifying the particular topic being illustrated.
